Chapter Fourteen

The next night we dressed in the servant clothes Daniel provided. Nicoleta received a maid’s dress, and I had a butler’s suit on. Alexandru’s crest was embroidered on our chests on full display.

Daniel drove us to the capital in an unremarkable car; nothing as fancy as I normally used. The windows were tinted though, letting me travel comfortably. My friend was to drop us off then hole up in our safehouse. Should everything go according to plan, he would greet me as the new king of Romania when we met again. If no sign of our victory was to appear within three days, Daniel was to assume we were imprisoned or worse – dead. Either way, he was supposed to check on our status by then.

We didn’t know how long it would take for us to be able to come close enough to Alexandru to kill him. My butler had told me he had manipulated the rosters so that we would be able to serve the king on the night we entered the castle. But should a servant with a higher status notice this error in the rosters, we could be stuck mopping floors for the next week. Sacrifices had to be made in order to achieve true peace. If I had to lower myself to clean the Bran Castle’s floors, I would do so. Nicoleta’s and her family’s safety was on the line here. Nothing I could possibly have to do was too much.

Daniel stopped the car in a parking lot behind the castle. “Here we are. That’s the servant’s entrance. There will be someone expecting you inside.” He turned around and glanced over at us from the driver’s seat.

“Thank you, Daniel.” I hoped the fact that I was truly grateful was apparent in my voice and expression. My butler had really done a lot for me in the 22 years he had served me. And now I expected him to go against the ruler of Romania at my side.

Daniel’s expression turned into a warm smile. “I will always be loyal to you, sire.”

“I’m grateful for that, friend.” I extended my hand to him. He looked at it in surprise but then clasped it. “Stay safe.”

“I should be telling you that.” Daniel sighed. “Don’t get yourselves killed.”

Nicoleta chuckled. “We’ll try our best not to.”

We exited the car and walked up to the servant’s entrance. The door opened when we were halfway there. A plump woman in her 40s with blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail glared at us with a stern expression on her face.

“Finally, you’re here.” The woman’s voice was commanding. She must have been head of the staff or a similar position, for her to possess such a booming voice which left no place for disobedience. “I have you on the roster for serving the king tonight. Why they’re sending rookies to do the important jobs, I have no idea. I need to explain everything to you before I’ll allow you anywhere close to the royal family.
