Chapter 7 – The Hunter’s Moon Ball

Tabitha

She breathed a sigh of relief that she got through the cocktail hour with no discernible bruises. Tabby had expected the curious looks. She’d even anticipated the cruel glances from women in prettier clothes and fancier jewelry. Nothing, however, had prepared her for Grandmother Constance Harper.

The current matriarch of the Harper family was thin and stood upright with a proud bearing that reminded Tabby of Dame Maggie Smith. Tabby would have felt wholly cowed by the older woman except she’d taken her aside in the greeting line and whispered in her ear. “You’re good for him.”

Heady words for a fish out of water, a woman out of her element. For the first time in her life, Tabby felt uncertain. She'd always breezed through life as the youngest daughter of a powerful family, but amidst the elite, she was definitely out of her depth.

Glancing around the room, she saw Kian talking with one of the society debs his grandmother had invited. The Hunter’s Ball had evolved into being a type of coming-out party for the elite circles the Harpers traveled in. Unexpected jealousy burned within Tabby, catching her off guard.

“Another drink?” Chad, one of Kian’s friends from school, asked as he handed her a bright red drink in a crystal highball glass.

She accepted the drink and took a tentative sip. As a rule, witches didn’t drink that much. Her powers could be unpredictable, and she certainly didn’t want to start having visions while in the middle of an important event.

The cranberry and vodka was delicious. A perfect sweet-tartness that encouraged the drinker to take another sip and then another. She fought against the urge, almost wanting to feel the release of the knots in her shoulders, which were vying for attention from the butterflies in her stomach.

“Thank you,” she said, smiling up at him. Chad was good looking in a smooth, pretty boy kind of way. A light version of Kian as she’d met him that first day. But whereas Kian had brought forth something within her to challenge him and engage her curiosity, Chad left her feeling flat.

“Anything for one of Kian’s friends.”

Tabby didn’t like the way Chad emphasized the word friend, as though it were an insult. “That’s very kind of you,” she said, wishing Kian would end the conversation with the woman across the drawing-room and come back to be by her side. The sheer profusion of porcelain, silver, crystal, and linens was enough to overwhelm anyone.

She reminded herself that she had an ally in Constance Harper and straightened her shoulders. “How long have you known Kian?”

Chad’s eyes grew dark, and Tabby felt the wave of sexual intent roll off him. He closed some of the polite distance between them, and once again Tabby cursed the fact that her witchy-powers didn’t include propelling assholes across rooms.

No sooner had she made the thought than the air around them stirred. Moved in a deliberate way that definitely pushed Chad back an appropriate number of steps.
