There are only so many places you can hide in Lost Harbor. And I’d checked them all. I’d found dead bodies and bags of lotus, but never anyone to question. It was like chasing a ghost. He was still here, I could practically feel him, but I couldn’t pin him down. It was maddening. Which was probably what he was going for.

It was a matter of time before we crossed paths, and all I could hope for was that it would be sooner rather than later. I had to find him before he got to Isla.

It was a mistake seeing her again. A mistake letting myself have her even for a moment. It was dangerous and selfish, and it was going to get her killed.

I walked into the house, surprised to see Anna on the couch, a bag of blood in her mouth. She stood. “Sorry, I needed a top off. They had some assholes scoping out Isla’s place, but I got them. They’re not going to bother her again.”

“Who’s watching her now?” I asked.

“Bruno and Frank. They can handle it while I get some blood,” she assured me.

They were my best enforcers after her. I nodded, appreciating that she’d called them off the hunt for Vincent to watch Isla for a while.

“What’s wrong with you?” Anna asked, her lips stained crimson from the blood bag she was drinking. “You seem more upset than usual. Did you find something?”

“He’s going to find her,” I said.

“He might,” she agreed. “But you’ve got people on her round the clock. If he wanted her, he’d have come after her already.”

That was the only thing keeping me from going insane. It didn’t make sense for Vincent to leave her alone this long unless he didn’t know she was important to me or he wasn’t going to involve her since she was human. Either way, we were running on borrowed time. I had to find him.

“Besides, she’s smart. And probably not even human if your hunch is to be believed,” Anna added.

“She’s not human.” I couldn’t be certain without tasting her blood, but even today, while we’d been together, I caught the scent of something a little different. Something I haven’t been around in a long time. If my suspicions were correct, she was more of a threat to Vincent than I was.

Anna sat on the armrest of the sofa. “You need to make a choice. You can’t be halfway in with your mate. It puts you both at risk. Regardless of Vincent, being with her is dangerous.”

“I know,” I said.

“If you lose control…”

She didn’t need to finish. I knew what she was warning me about. The same thing she’d been warning me about since I realized what Isla was. To complete the bond, I had to feed from her, but the longer I waited, the more my bloodlust grew.

Knowing she was out there had destroyed my appetite, I could barely stomach the taste of any other blood. My body only wanted her. It was destructive on a level I’d never experienced before.
