On-going Experiments

Currently a number of experiments are being conducted in the NC2IF Center. These include the following:

• Characterization of human reports—We are developing mathematical models to characterize human reports including models for first and second order uncertainty.

• Computer assisted knowledge elicitation—Experiments are being conducted with variations in computer mediated knowledge elicitation for human observers (ranging from no mediation-simply allowing users to input data free form, to computer based mediation via templates and guiding advisory agents, to human assisted elicitation analogous to a 911 center; see Jones, Jefferson Jr., Connors, McNeese, and Obeita, 2005).

• Role of stress and emotion—Experiments have been conducted to understand the role of human emotion and stress in effectiveness in team based decision-making for a situational awareness exercise (Pfaff, 2008).

• Role of peer dynamics in reporting—Experiments are being designed to understand how observers are affected by the actions of their crowd peers in accuracy of reporting.

• Advanced visualization and sonification for data understanding—Development of 3-D and 2½D displays and sonification for understanding complex data sets and focusing attention (Hall et al., 2008).

• Exploration of military/NGO interactions—Development of models and experiments to improve understanding and cooperation between military personnel and non-government organizations (NGO) personnel for applications such as disaster relief.

While these are only a beginning, these experiments are anticipated to assist in addressing the new role of humans as observers, analysts, and collaborators for addressing problems such as situational awareness and combat identification.
