CHAPTER TWELVE

The water burned where it touched her skin, but Audrey didn’t try and turn it down. There was something almost therapeutic to the scalding. Maybe if she stayed here long enough, if she scrubbed her skin until it was raw and red and bleeding, she would finally be clean of everything she had ever done and everything that had been done to her.

She’d taken showers like this before. But never after something good.

And that kiss with Garrett had been everything good.

So why was she in here? Why was she scrubbing as if the stain would never come off? If she cried, the tears got mixed with the rest of the water and she could ignore it. She didn’t sob. So that was a plus.

She wanted to kiss him again. She wanted a redo. Wanted to ignore how she had reacted the first time. Was she a crazy person? Very possible. Only a crazy person would know they were turning into a werewolf.

Or dying.

It didn’t feel real. None of this did. She was sure she was going to wake up from this dream at any moment. Dream? Nightmare? It was too mixed up to be one or the other.

She hoped Garrett was real. Everything else could go away but she wanted to keep him.

Was that smart? Probably not. Her emotions were all jumbled up, she was going through something traumatic, and if some psychologist somewhere got a hold of her, they would probably scream at her for how she was acting and then put her on a bunch of drugs.

But she wasn’t crazy. Probably. She hoped not.

Still, she thought Garrett was keeping something from her. Something besides the fact that she might die. There was a hesitance to him whenever the subject came up. Maybe he was just uncomfortable with the fact that she was a dead woman walking. But she thought it was more than that.

She wasn’t going to run again. Somewhere in the night she had made that decision. She really believed he wanted to keep her safe.

So what was she going to do?

He seemed to have some sort of idea of how to help her. Would he ask her to join his pack? Was that even an option? Or would they kill her before she could become one of those ferals?

No. She believed him when he said he wouldn’t let her be killed.

She started to shiver, and for a second thought the water had gone cold. But it was still as scalding as ever. It was her body. Shivers wracked her and pain almost had her doubling over. It felt like her guts had been ripped out and then shoved back into her stomach in the wrong order.

She bit back a scream. She didn’t want Garrett coming in here and asking what was wrong. She didn’t want him to look at her and tell her she was dying. With a shaking hand, she turned the water off and then took several deep breaths. She was fine. The pain was already receding.
