Loyalty

There’s an emotional component to our anxiety as well. We’re attached to the characters, and ending a series can almost feel disloyal, as if we’re abandoning the characters.

This is another mindset issue. Only a creative would worry about the feelings of a character! Sometimes I have to give myself a stern talking-to and remind myself that I’m writing about fictional characters, and I’m not being disloyal if I end a series. (Yes, I’m weird!)

Reader Reaction

Then there’s the readers to consider. If we’ve done our job well, readers are attached to the story world. They don’t want to see the series end. They’ll lobby for more books and, as someone who doesn’t like to disappoint anyone, I find it hard to squash the people-pleaser in me and say “no” to readers. The reality is that if readers love a series, they’re never going to be happy if you end it. They’ll always want more books, but that’s a good thing. This is another mindset shift.

Instead of focusing on the negative (they’re so disappointed) realize you’ve done your job well and created passionate readers. You can use the opportunity to connect with your readers and move them on to another series, which we’ll look at in the next chapter on spinoffs and literary universes.
