Anxiety had swamped her the majority of the day, ever since she learned the sort of fellow Lord Chopwell was and what he’d done to her sister. The story Cara told echoed in her ears over and over as awful images played about in her mind. How could anyone do such a thing to her sweet and caring sister? It was unfathomable. How fortunate Cara had been that Darling had saved her from an even worse fate. Cait had liked the earl upon meeting him, but now she adored the man and would be forever grateful that he was in Cara’s life.

A fresh wave of worries for Iona had crashed back over her, however. Darling had saved Cara from Chopwell, but had Iona needed saving too? Had something truly awful happened to her? Was that why her letters home had stopped? Cait didn’t know the man at all. She didn’t know where or how to begin her search. But…Daniel Westham probably did. If she could just get him to—

“What if he doesn’t come?” Corinna asked, pacing the drawing room for the millionth time that evening. Her younger sister’s nervousness only served to put Cait even more on edge. “He has not been himself and if he should decide to skip dinner this evening, I will never know who the fellow was from last night. My Adonis.”

“You might want to actually meet the man before you lay claim to him,” Cait said.

Corinna turned her whole focus on Cait. “How can I meet him if I don’t know who he is? And if Lucien doesn’t attend dinner—”

“Lucien will be here,” Cait replied. “He may not be himself, but he would never disappoint his grandparents.”

But that argument did not seem to alleviate her younger sister’s concern as Corinna turned on her heel to pace the length of the drawing room once more.

Cara glanced up from a note she was perusing and said very calmly, “Cori, even if Lucien does not make it this evening, we will discover the fellow’s identity one way or another. We’ll summon Lucien here, if we have to.”

“That could take days,” Corinna complained, mid-pace. “Especially if he’s of a mind not to come.”

Less than a moment later, the Earl of Darling stepped over the threshold, his hazel eyes landing immediately on Cara. “My love,” he said, and started toward her.

“Reese,” she greeted him and pushed off the settee to press a kiss to his cheek. “I have missed you.”

“Happier words I’ve never heard,” he said with a wink.

Cait had the urge to roll her eyes, but Corinna sighed from her spot along the far wall and looked at the pair rather longingly.

“Oh, Reese!” Cara began. “Corinna has been trying to determine a certain gentleman’s identity all day. You might know who he is.”

“Oh?” The earl glanced from Cara to Corinna and back once more.

“Last night,” Cara continued. “Apparently, he spoke with Lucien the majority of the evening.
