CHAPTER HOOKS
(return to Table of Contents)
I have read many a lament from writers who claim there is no reason for chapters in fiction. I can sympathize with the point of view since we don’t want our readers to stop reading. Chapter breaks generally make convenient stopping points. I suggest we break that level of convenience.
To stop reading can break the flow and continuity of the story. It’s death to the writer as readers may struggle to pick the story back up to continue.
Mystery writers are masters of the hook. Many of them use more barbs, snags, and hooks than opening day of trout season. Hence, the mystery part of their work. Their goal is to remove a who, what, where, when, why, or how in such a manner that the reader keeps at the story until that gap has been filled in. A good mystery writer may take out two, three, or even four of the basic story elements. The reader must search for clues along with the primary character to discover the missing pieces.
