GINA’S STORY

Not all men with hidden lives are hiding histories as sexual deviants. Gina had been divorced for years. She was a consultant in the chiropractic field who helped physicians establish their practices. She lived a fast-paced life of work, friends, and travel. She wasn’t particularly looking for a relationship when she met Derrick. But he pursued the relationship and eventually got her to consent to a date. Derrick said he was divorced, too. Handsome, talkative, open—he seemed like a nice enough guy to pass some time with. But Gina didn’t want anything too serious. After all, her life was pretty full with travel, business, and her young teenage boys.

It was hard to reach Derrick because his job kept him on the road. This was before pagers and cell phones, so Gina relied on him touching base with her as his job permitted and when she was also in town. Their time together was mostly on weekends. He would spend one night of the weekend at her house, but, oddly, she never spent a single night at his place. In fact, she really didn’t know where he lived—she knew the area of town but not where, exactly.

Gina and Derrick lived about forty minutes apart. When Gina suggested they spend some time at his house for a change of pace, Derrick rented an apartment for their weekends together that provided “easier access” for both of them. The forty-minute distance was reduced by their renting a place halfway between their two houses.

One night, Gina got a phone call from a woman who identified herself as Derrick’s wife. She confronted Gina about the “affair” Gina was having with her husband. Derrick, it turns out, was married and still living with his wife. One night per weekend was spent at his home. The times when Gina had sent him to the store or on errands for her, Derrick was actually going home and checking in. His traveling job kept him unavailable for both women. He was elusive enough that no one really knew where he was at any specific time. His ploy had worked well with Gina for a year or more.
