Now, let’s go back and retrieve the list of wants and needs we compiled in chapter 1. We are going to turn them into affirmations.

You should have a long list of things that you want and or need. What we need to do here is distill that list down using a few criteria.

The following exercise is found in the outstanding book by Victor Boc titled How to Solve all Your Money Problems Forever. Victor is an expert at visualization and affirmations. I recommend his book to anyone experiencing a lack of money in their life.

Look at each item on your list and ask yourself the following questions:

Do I have a burning desire for this thing?

You must truly want the things you are going to be affirming. If it is something that you think most people would want, that you think you should want, that you used to want, or that you think your mom and dad would want you to want, you should probably get it off the list. If you do not feel a burning desire for an item, cross it off! Casual interest is not what where looking for here.

Is it possible?

This is pretty simple. In other words, if one of your desires on the list is to swim from LA to Japan underwater holding your breath the whole time, you should probably take it off the list. It is not my intention to limit you in any way in your desires. In fact, I encourage you to think big! Affirming and visualizing sailing to Japan on your new 100-foot yacht is awesome. We simply must keep in mind the laws of physics as we do the exercise.

Will anyone be harmed?

We do not want to be malicious, damaging, physically violent, or mentally violent. In other words, visualizing and affirming your brother-in-law driving his car off a cliff is not what we’re after. It’s better to visualize a more mutually beneficial and loving relationship with him. Or if nothing else, visualize your ability to negotiate your life around this difficult person.

Does it contradict any other item on your list?

Does the fulfillment of any item on your list preclude the fulfillment of any other item on your list? Is energy being pulled in opposite directions? For example, if your desire is to be the CEO of a fortune 500 company and you are also visualizing becoming a monk who meditates 15 hours a day in a monastery, it would be advisable to pick one of those or the other to focus on.

Is it enough?

This is a hard one for me sometimes. Like all of us, I have a tendency to not set my goals high enough. I have to catch myself when I feel like I’m holding back. Just notice your long-standing negative conditioning. For example, in the back of your mind you might hear your mom saying, “Be reasonable. You’ll never make $500,000 a year by owning your own business! Why don’t you just go get a regular job?”
