Subjectivity for Me, but not for Thee

As historian of science Stephen C. Meyer shows in his book Return of the God Hypothesis, some leading figures in the scientific community are beginning to consider God a perfectly plausible answer to the ultimate questions that precede scientific inquiry. Materialism, however, remains fashionable in elite intellectual circles. Consider even the derisive way we use the word “subjective”: when we say that someone’s appreciation of a painting or taste for fine wine is “subjective” we mean simply that it is arbitrary—that one person’s taste is as good as any other’s. Subjective experiences are understood as mere feelings with no real basis in the outside world.

This notion stems, in part, from the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, an eighteenth-century German thinker who defined scientific study as a realm of objective inquiry: “If something is valid for anybody in possession of his reason, then its grounds are objective and sufficient,” he wrote.⁸
