TURN IT OFF The app that came before all others—the off button.
Seriously, just turn your phone off. It will feel great.
Better yet, turn it off and put it in your car in the driveway.
WORDS ON UNPLUGGING BY SARAH SCHULWEIS, BUSINESS CONSULTANT
I love that technology has given me the safety of the written word, as my introversion is an asset and a frustration. When I have a chance to express myself or touch base with a friend to tell them I love them via email or text, it gives me the chance to connect while protecting my limited extroverted energy.
So how to unplug? Literally the off button.
Our best work as creatives—big-picture thinking, creativity, strategy, ideas, connection—can only happen when stepping away. Sure, I’ve had weeks that felt nonstop, but I savor the days, weeks, months when balance feels like the priority.
I leave it (my phone) in the other room or off my body as much as I can. I take walks without it. I turn it off completely when I walk into therapy, dinners with friends, or whenever my attention needs to be on anything but my phone.
I make it harder to sign in to addictive apps.
I make sure that my clients and friends know that reaching me and getting a response could take some time, but that I love and care for them.
Overall, technology is my most coveted tool for work, and when I feel tired, frustrated, or have negative self-talk, I step away and connect with my actual inner thoughts.
