The filter tips on cigarettes are not biodegradable, but the rest of the cigarette will compost. Nicotine is highly toxic to wildlife, so cigarette ends should not be thrown into the environment (especially when lit), as some birds will pick them up and get poisoned.

Citrus fruit (see also Fruit)

The skins of citrus fruit are rich in oil which repels water, which can inhibit composting. Organic citrus is not sprayed with fungicides and pesticides and so the compost microorganisms do not have a hard time, but even non-organic citrus will eventually decompose. Half oranges and grapefruits are great for attracting slugs – pick them up in the morning and rinse in a bucket of water and put back again – the slugs will eat off any wax on the skin too, and then the halves are much easier to compost.
