(The following is one of Stacyâs demented stories. I cut a couple of them in the final draft. The following was supposed to be the first story Stacy told, but when I was finished, I felt that it was so long that it was distracting to the overall plot. Now that youâre finished reading the novel, you can probably use all the distractions you can get. Remember that this is Stacy telling Vera a story.)
DELETED SCENE
ââ¦So, one day a businesswoman is rushing back to work after lunch at a restaurant. Letâs call her Tina McKinney. Sheâs middle-aged and dressed in a business suitâyour typical career businesswoman. Anyway, she runs into a friend of hers, whom she hasnât seen in years. Letâs call her Shelley Halima. âHey, Shelley!â Tina says; she continues: âHow have you been? I havenât seen you since the divorce?â As soon as she says it, she immediately regrets it, remembering the messy divorce her friend had had two years ago. Nevertheless, her friend smiles and hugs her, undisturbed. Tina is relieved. Figuring that her friendâs ease must be due to a new relationship, she ventures: âSeeing anyone new?â Shelley shakes her head, still unconcerned, before revealing: âI havenât had a man in two years, and I donât need one.â
âThere was a tint of antagonism at the mention of men, and Tina was just beginning to think that her friend had switched teams and gone over to the rug-munching side, when Shelley announced, âI have Vincent now.â âVincent?â Tina asked; and then: âWho is he?â âVincent isnât a who, girl,â Shelley corrected her, ââheâs a godsend.â And then, with a loud salespersonâs voice, she went on, âThe Vincent 6000: ten inches of vibrating magnificence, always ready for my pleasure.â Tina stared at her uneasily: ââ¦A vibrator?â she said, looking around, in case anyone had heard. âDamn right,â Shelley said proudly. But Tina still had a frown on her face: âYouâre saying you donât need a man because you have a vibrator?â âThatâs exactly what Iâm saying. Vincent is always hard; he doesnât fall asleep on meââ Tina interrupted her with, âNot unless the batteries run out.â Shelley shook her head: âNo, girlâVincent runs off the energy of my body.â ââ¦It does what?â âHe runs off my juices, honey.â â¦Tinaâs frown deepened: âYour pussy juices?â Shelley nodded her head in the same proud way: âDamn straight. â¦And get this: Vincent talks to me.â âYour vibrator talks?â âYeah, he says the most wonderful things. Itâs like he senses my moods. When I want to get raunchy, he says the nastiest things to me; when I want to be treated tenderly, he whispers the sweetest things.â Tina was uncomfortable listening to all this; and suddenly realizing something about her friend, she said, âDo you realize that youâre calling your vibrator âheâ?â âWhat else would I call him?â Shelley said as if there were some kind of bigotry behind Tinaâs comment: as if she had just said that black people werenât human beings, or that women were mentally inferior.
