Anti-science

Most scientists concentrate on their science. Some are involved in teaching. A few promote science to the broader community. Only a handful of active scientists actually deal with the ingress of anti-science into the schools and community. If litigation, broadcasting, writings and public lectures are any guide5, then I am one of those few scientists who tackles anti-science. I am more than qualified than any scientist in Australia to make comments on, for instance, creationism.

Creationists, as a matter of faith, believe that planet Earth is a mere 6,000 years old, that all sedimentary rocks and fossils were formed in a great flood some 4,000 years ago and that evolution does not exist. Creationists invented “creation science” and they called their evangelical ministers “creation scientists”. Some of these “creation scientists” have basic scientific qualifications. The “science” of creationists is presented with scriptural authority and intertwined with morality. Creationists have tried to have their narrow fundamentalist view of the world taught in school science courses and have exerted considerable political pressure to be given a fair go and be allowed to teach an alternative to evolution to every school child in a pluralist society.

There is an uncanny similarity between creationists and the climate industry. Just as creationists invented “creation science”, the climate industry invented “climate science”. Both areas use a very narrow view of science to come to an all-embracing world-view. Both groups have their prophets (e.g. Duane Gish, Al Gore), a few prominent leaders (e.g. Carl Wieland, Tim Flannery) and an army of the faithful worker bees (e.g. Phil Jones, Michael Mann; Andrew Snelling, Ken Ham). Both groups have a holy book (the Bible; the latest IPCC reports) but very few of the faithful have actually read and understood their holy books. The faithful just believe. Both groups publish their own work in their own journals over which they exert strong editorial control. No work that challenges the pre-conceived dogma ever sees the light of day in their journals. In their various small circles, the officers of both movements profit in terms of money, power and prestige. With both groups, there is a strong underpinning the principles of Christianity. With the creationists, salvation can be purchased by donations, purchases of literature and DVDs. Both creationists and global warmers have a catastrophist view of the world. They both incorporate aspects of catastrophic scenarios which various unbalanced folk have touted off and on for thousands of years. A negative view of the future predominates. However, all is not lost. Salvation can be purchased (e.g. carbon tax, emissions trading) and, once indulgences have been purchased, then the planet or your soul will be saved.

Both groups are long on cant and short on fact, intertwine data with interpretation and are totally unwilling to expose their data to scrutiny. The parallels become even closer when one looks at the use of data. Climate catastrophists and creationists use a very narrow body of data, wallow in trivial obscure science, argue that any natural variation proves their point
