CHAPTER TEN

Creating Hope

IN THAT VERY MOMENT THAT YOU MAKE A DECISION TO do something about it, something incredible happens: you create hope.

Hope is something that drives us forward, hope is the fuel for taking action, hope is the thing that gets us from here to there. When you make a decision to take action, hope pops up even when you didn’t feel like it was there two seconds before. Why? Because taking action gives you your power back. You get control back the moment you say, ‘Right, I’m done. I’m going to do something about it.’ In that moment, when you have hope, you’ve also got the power and the courage to change, because that’s what happens when you make a decision. That is the time to take action. Do not let hope dissipate. Act on it.

The trick is to act on it straight away. Don’t let that monkey brain take over. You know, the one with all the negative chatter. It doesn’t matter how big or small the action is – it might be as simple as sending a text or registering a domain name for a new business idea – but it’s something that takes you closer to where you want to be rather than further away. Every day you let slip by between you and your goal, you’re just building a bigger and bigger wall to climb over to reach it.

When we’re scared to take action what happens is we let another day pass, and another day, and then another … and now it seems like the gulf between where we are and where we want to be is getting wider and wider. Like when you don’t go to the gym. The first day off? Just a day. The second day, no problem. But before you know it, it’s three weeks and, all of a sudden, it’s hard to get back into your routine.

The same is true if you’ve ever had an argument with someone. You think to yourself, You know what, I just want to make up. It doesn’t really matter who is right or who is wrong, I just want to reach out. But then what happens is another day goes past, and then three months have gone and you’re thinking, Wow, now it’s too late.

It is NEVER too late. Not that you should let three months pass – you shouldn’t – but don’t let the mistakes of the past become the mistakes of the future.
