I approached the pub, feeling like a teenager with his parents coming along for his big date. As I’d been leaving the house, Madeline and Harold had stopped me to say how much they liked Emma. Things had snowballed from there.

“Oh, I’m so excited for this,” my grandmother said. “I haven’t been to a pub in ages.”

“It’ll be a blast,” Madeline said. “I love a good quiz.”

“I’m quite handy with the etymology questions,” Harold said. “And anything about beetles.”

Fantastic. I was bringing my grandmother, my aunt, and her beetle-obsessed boyfriend to quiz night with my fake girlfriend. At least the paparazzi wouldn’t be there.

“You’ll have to be on your own team,” I said. “Emma never mentioned me bringing along three interlopers.”

My grandmother laughed. “Oh, we’ll wipe the floor with you, my lad.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you did.” I leaned over to press a quick kiss to the top of her head.

It was a beautiful night in Charming Cove, with the soft breeze carrying the salty scent of the sea mixed with flowers.

“I do love it here,” my grandmother said as we stopped at the door of the pub. “I don’t know why I ever moved.”

“You wanted the night life in London.” I pulled open the door so she could sail through.

“Of course. That’s right. But perhaps I’ll come back.”

“I’d like that. The house is certainly big enough.”

Inside the pub, the tables were already mostly full. Excited chatter sounded from people holding glasses full of golden beer. The sound died as they all noticed us.

Not ideal.

To my left, a formidable woman with short dark hair stood abruptly and glared at the crowd. They immediately looked away from us and resumed talking. Emma stood next to the woman, and I had to assume she was Hazel, the leader of the coven.

“Well, she’s quite impressive,” my grandmother said. “I like her already.”

I smiled. “Let’s go meet her.”

As much as I wanted to shuffle my family off to the corner like an embarrassed teenager, I was, in fact, an adult.

The coven table was one of the bigger ones in the pub, located right in front of the fire that cracked merrily despite the warm weather outside. It wasn’t too warm, at least. Six witches sat around it, and Emma made the introductions.

“You must join us,” Hazel said to my grandmother, aunt, and Harold. “We’ll make room.”

“Oh, but there aren’t enough seats,” Madeline said.

“Nonsense.” Hazel grinned, then waved her hand and murmured something under her breath. Magic sparked on the air, and three more chairs appeared at a table that was suddenly larger. The oddest thing was, we didn’t even bump into the tables that surrounded us. It was still a tight fit, but somehow, she’d created more space in the pub.

“Told you she was powerful,” Emma murmured at my side.

“She’s quite something.”

Emma peered around me to see my companions, who were settling themselves into the seats that had been created for them. “I’m glad you brought them along.”

“They insisted.”

“Well, the more, the merrier.” She took a seat, and I lowered myself into the one next to her.
