Chapter Five

Hagen

It’s almost six when Jaid parks his car in front of my house. He insisted on showing me the last house on the schedule for the day, even though I kept telling him there was no need. I’m absolutely certain Brandt will choose the second house. It’s perfect on paper, and it felt so completely right.

But instead of accepting that and letting me convince him to find a motel and spend the afternoon in bed, Jaid drove me out to the middle of nowhere to see another house. It was fine, but not as good as the second one. At least he bought me lunch first.

“Are you good to start at eight again tomorrow?” he asks now. “We have four houses on the schedule, but none of them are as far away, so we should be done by midafternoon.”

“Or,” I begin, “we could go to the beach and fuck in the ocean. I’ve been meaning to try that.”

“No. Even if it wouldn’t take us half a day to get to the beach, the answer would still be no.”

His words are tough, but there’s a faint tremor in his voice that tells me he wishes he could say yes. Time to change tactics.

“Do you have plans for tonight? I have a meeting with my roommates, but maybe after I could buy you dinner.”

He swallows, conflict written all over his face.

“If you’re worried about me tempting you to be unprofessional again, I promise I won’t. I thought today was going to be an awful chore, but I actually had fun. Because of you. I like you. So… dinner?”

His hesitation speaks volumes, and disappointment swamps me. “Could… could we do it tomorrow night? After your part in my work is over?”

Yesssssss.

“Of course. That’s an even better idea. It gives me time to plan.”

His eyes widen. “Oh, crap.”

“It’s going to be the date to end all dates,” I announce. “People will write songs about it. Teenagers will cry themselves to sleep wishing for someone to plan a date like it just for them. Years from now, whenever anyone says they went on a good date, they’ll have to qualify it with ‘but not as good as the one Hagen took Jaid on.’”

“I’d be fine with us just grabbing a burger somewhere,” he protests weakly, but I’m really excited about this date now.

“No, no. No mere burger is enough to prove my good intentions and regard for you.”

He narrows his eyes. “Why are you talking like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re starring in a period drama that’s only a little bit true to the time it’s set in.”

Well, that’s insulting. I think I had the quality of a freaking BBC production.

“Just wait,” I vow. “You’ll be swept off your feet.”

He’s still laughing when I get out of the car and shut the door, but that’s okay. I like him all relaxed like that. I wave as he pulls away.

Inside, my roommates are waiting in the living room.

“You’re late,” Eoin declares. I’ve always thought he has a stick up his ass, even before we started living together.
