CONDUCT A PRE-CLIMBING INSPECTION
Before climbing, conduct a safety inspection of the wall. Overtightening holds can cause stress cracks and may cause the hold to break. Check for cracks around the bolt holes. If you find a cracked hold, remove and replace it.
Look behind the wall at the structural support system. Structural weakening and possible failure of key support members may occur if water is allowed to soak into the climbing wall. Rot can weaken previously solid wood to the point of failure. Look for signs of rot, weakened joints, fatigue in the metal joints, tightness of the joints, and the like. Rot is caused by a fungus. As the fungus grows, it changes the color of the wood. Inspect the wood for rot or signs of rot by examining it for yellowish or brown discoloration. The chance of wood rot can be mitigated by keeping your climbing wall dry and ventilated.
