Addison wasn’t quite sure why his last words had rubbed her so wrong. Well, scratch that, she knew why, but she felt guilty about being sad. She should be happy that all of this Zavukai’i trouble would be out of her life. Zavus would be gone by that afternoon, and she’d have nothing to fear when she was picking out avocados or looking for another head of romaine. Things would be back to normal. Predictable, unchanging, boring, normal.

She tipped her head back and let the hot shower soak her hair. It felt good. Even with her robe and the heat on, it was still chilly in the house. She’d felt the cold of the floorboards through her chenille slipper socks, and it wasn’t awful—it was bearable—but she was always just a little uncomfortable during the winters. The best it got was when she had a fire going in the living room, but even then, she had to go back to her cold bedroom.

Maybe it’d be nice to be from a hot world. She’d never lived someplace where it got really warm in the summer. Maybe it’d be worse than the rough winters she was used to, but it might be interesting to find out. She found herself trying to picture what Vannik’s home-world looked like. Was it all desert or tropical forests? Was the sky the familiar blue, or something altogether different? What would it be like to have traveled across worlds?

She sighed and turned around to reach for the conditioner, and if later she took a little longer shaving that morning than usual, it wasn’t because she really expected anything to happen. She just wanted to be prepared. Just in case.

He’d seemed so harsh when she’d first seen him the night before. So different from the relaxed man she’d encountered that morning. As she toweled off, she thought of his face when he’d taken his first bite of cinnamon roll. He’d looked like he had a piece of the divine on his tongue, and it made her wonder if that’s the way he groaned when he—no, she wasn’t going to think about that. If she wanted a man, she could find one. She wasn’t so hard up that needed to lust after an alien who’d be leaving in most likely a matter of hours.

She dressed quickly, pulling some lined pants out from the bottom of the drawer. She hadn’t taken them out in years. It looked like they’d been part of a short-lived experiment with winter 5k training. She hoped they still fit.

Luckily, Addison was able to pull them on without too much trouble.

A few layers and a slightly impractical amount of makeup for trudging through snow drifts later, she was ready to go back out to check on her guest. Addison couldn’t help her lips from curving up when she saw Mittens settled comfortably on his lap, her purr loud enough to hear from the hallway.

She didn’t have the best view from over the back of the couch, but she could tell that he was sitting up and he’d let the blankets pool down around his stomach.
