Chapter Twenty-Two

After such a long and exhausting day, it was fun to just grab burgers and shakes and walk along the beach, talking to my sister. We’d grown up together, but I was realizing more and more that I hardly knew her as a person.

Sisterhood was so strangely intimate and not all at the same time.

“I love the ocean,” Iris said dreamily, dragging a French fry through her shake and staring off toward the horizon. “I know you’re not an Earth Witch, Cindy. Do you feel its… pulse? The way it breathes?”

I nodded.

“Art feels the same way, you know,” she said conversationally. “Watch this.”

She knelt down in the damp dirt—not the dry fluffy sand that made up most of the beach, but not the super damp stuff either—and used her finger to trace out a little figure in the sand. It looked a little like a pixie, but more ethereal, more airy… a sylph perhaps, clothed in her long wisps of floating hair. It was incredible—the detail my sister could create with one finger and the sand at her feet.

Then she dusted off her hands and breathed over the image.

At first, I thought she was just blowing the extra sand from her picture, then the sylph moved.

And lifted off of the sand.

And flew away.

Leaving the blank sand before us.

“I’d forgotten,” I said in awe, staring over the sea where the little sylph-figure had disappeared. “That your art really comes alive.”

Iris shrugged, digging her toe into the sand. “It never lasts,” she said softly. “They always fade away in the end.”
