There are so many things in life that masquerade as courage but are really just fear dressed up in a valor costume.

How about the rageaholic? He stays mad so he doesn’t have to be fearful.

There’s the seductive woman or the beauty queen who is frightened by men and has learned how to use her body to reduce aggressive lions to purring pussycats.

There is the brainiac who needs to be smarter than everyone else to deal with his insecurities. He believes as long as he can outthink everyone on the planet, he won’t have to be afraid of them.

The bodybuilder can be using another fear crutch, dealing with his or her trepidation by being stronger than everyone else.

Ever met the Bible scholar guy? He knows everything about the Book and hides behind religion.

The list could go on and on. I am not suggesting in any way that beauty, brains, talent or muscles are wrong in themselves (rage is an exception, of course). But when we are motivated out of fear instead of inspired by faith, the wrong spirit anoints our strengths.

Courageous Types

There are two types of courage that are admired in the kingdom of God. The first one I call the “fear that has said its prayers” kind of courage. It is courage that takes action in the midst of intense fear. Esther demonstrated this class of courage. Haman, the king’s right-hand man, hated a Jewish man named Mordecai because he refused to treat him like a god. In revenge, Haman convinced the king to exterminate all of the Jews, not knowing the queen herself was Jewish.
