CHAPTER TWELVE

The Passions’s house was small but warm and something I’d imagined in an HGTV spread. It had bold colors against white paneling with glass and gold light fixtures and a combination of assorted furniture that kept the room interesting. The couch was royal blue. One accent chair was yellow with geometric white shapes. The other chair was white. While I’d never put all these pieces together myself, I couldn’t help but admit that it worked.

The living room was a showroom, and a glance down the hall hinted at a white kitchen with subway tiles that would probably make me swoon. “I love this house.”

“Thank you,” the woman at the door said. From the pictures on the sideboard by the staircase, I knew she was Jane Passions.

Jane was back on her feet. Her toes were red. Jeans encased her thick thighs. She wore funky jewelry over a white shirt, and her hair was dyed red which looked great on her.

“I designed the room myself.”

I bet. I could already tell the woman had great fashion sense. “Do you do this for a living?”

She smiled. “No. I’m a graphic designer. Interior design is just a hobby.”

I looked around the room and folded my arms. “You should definitely make it more than just a hobby. You’re amazing.”

She giggled. “Thank you.”

Renell cleared his throat, as if to remind us to kiss his ass.

Jane got right to it as she closed the door. “Thank you so much for taking the time to see us. With you here, I feel like I can finally breathe.”

Renell lifted his chin. “If your husband is innocent, we will see him freed.”

Jane burst into tears. The suddenness of it shocked us all, including Jane. She took off her glasses to wipe her eyes. “I’m sorry, I’m just so grateful. Thank you.”

Renell wasn’t even paying attention. He was just watching me with that look that said, “Take notes.”

I rolled my eyes and focused on the grieving woman. “Why don’t you sit down.” I walked over to Jane and placed a hand on her back to lead her to the living room.

Jane sat down in the white chair.

“Can I get you some water?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No, no. I should be serving you.” She tried to get up, but I placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Stay. I’ll get it.”

“Thank you. The sink has a filter on it.”

I left the room and went to the kitchen. I didn’t linger and awe over the bronze farmhouse sink or marvel at the cabinets' metal fixtures. I didn’t gawk at the granite or the polished wooden floors. Instead, I grabbed the water and left the room as quickly as possible.

Okay, maybe I did take a second or two, but no more than that.

Renell had transformed the geometric accent chair into a throne by sheer presence alone.

Jane was talking as I entered the room. She paused to say, “Thank you,” before going on. Glass in hand, she took a breath. “It was so stupid. I should have known better than to go into town that night.
