CHAPTER ELEVEN

I twirled on my way out of the front door of Vanderguard and soaked in the moonlight and… cigarette smoke... and fumes from the trash that sat on the curb?

Well… They weren’t exactly the scents I was going for, but this was New York. Take it over or leave it.

And tonight, I was taking it.

I took a deep breath and skipped down the steps before finishing with a jump onto the sidewalk. It would have served me right if I’d fallen and twisted my ankle, but that wasn’t going to happen because today, I was lucky.

I spun again and again, my sneakers barely touching the ground. The dark world rushed past me in broken shadows and life.

I’d survived finals.

I was done.

And with a bachelor’s in Marketing, the entire world felt like my oyster. I could go anywhere. Do anything. Be anyone. The ONP would call on me when they needed me, but otherwise, my life was mine.

Maybe I’d get my MBA, but maybe I wouldn’t. Maybe I’d move to Paris or just spend the summer there. I hadn’t been there since I was a child and I had a craving for a beignet.

But better than all that, I hadn’t seen Forrester since Saturday night.

He was in rehab from the werewolf attack. He’s survived, and the doctors said he’d make a full recovery, so I didn’t feel bad about the happiness that washed over me every time I was able to walk down the hall and not have to fear being shocked into a coma.

And Harry remembered the combination to his lock.

It had been the worst and best week of my life, and it was finally over.

I had no responsibilities. I’d skipped my meeting with Agent Blood in favor of writing in a detailed letter, which the bureau had accepted. I wasn’t a suspect. They didn’t need anything else from me, and I didn’t need the feelings the agent over the Paranormal Branch aroused.

As my feet came to a halt, my heart slowed, and the images around me settled. Then something caught my eye. Actually, not my eye, but my senses. A dark, stunning power pulsed like a rushing river around me, breaking my train of thought.

Clapping made me turn my head, and there, leaning against the stair rail to my build, was Harper. Her arms were folded, her feet were crossed at the ankle. With her curly head cocked, she eyed me. “That was mildly entertaining. You do this performance often?”

A smirk curved my lips. “Same time after every finals week. I’ve finished school!”

Harper smiled as she pushed off the stair rail. “Well, let me be the first to congratulate you.” As she came my way, I couldn’t help but look around for Renell. “He isn’t here.”

“Who?” I played dumb.

“Renell.”

“Hm? Oh, yeah.” I cleared my throat. “Well, what are you doing here?”

She cocked her head and then gave it a small shake. “You have no clue, do you?”

“No clue about what?” I could tell I was missing something big here.
