Chapter 16 - Synn

As soon as I leave the Warden standing in the Main Hall, my mind rushes back to her and the smile slides off my face. He’s made me lose her.

But the moment I think that, I hear the siren and my breath catches.

What else did I expect, I think to myself, my teeth gritted as I keep walking, making sure I look just as confused as all the little sheep around me.

At first, I’m determined to go straight back to the Upside-Down Place and lay low for as long as the Warden decides to play the jailer.

But then she pops into my mind again and I slow down, my heart racing. I’ve no idea where she went and as far as I know, that fucking vampire could’ve brought all the guards and all the dogs here with him.

I stop, looking around frantically. Luckily, that makes me blend right in.

My heart skips a beat when I see it. The tail of her red dress disappear down the stairs to Level Minus One.

She’s not going to her room, as she’s supposed to. Of course she’s not.

Fucking hell, I think to myself. That girl will be the death of me.

But it’s too late. I’m already rushing after her, my mind exploding with images of the dogs hurting her.

My body vibrating with rage, I get down to the hallway leading into the Library and I glance around. There’s no one here so I tap my Tension Rune, making myself invisible to the eye.

I stop right before a corner, spotting her getting inside the Forbidden Section.

I have to take a deep breath to stop myself from charging after her. Doesn’t she know? Doesn’t she know they’re bound to come barging in there?

But I can’t. I made myself swear never to say a word to her again.

Still, I can’t walk away. Not as long as she’s not safe.

So I curse softly and I remain standing where I found myself, glancing around every now and then.

I really need to leave the Academy as soon as this is over. Maybe even leave the Upside-Down Place, I think to myself as I feel seconds turn into minutes. It’s no longer the safest place for me to be. It might even be considered the most dangerous.

Just as I think that, I see them. I suck in a breath and take a step back.

And they’re out of sight now, but I can still hear them. Their low growl and the dripping of their saliva as they approach the door to the Forbidden Section.

My mind scrambles for ways to get her out of there without being seen.

“You can’t do this,” I hear an unfamiliar, frightened voice say.

“I have permission to search the entire premises,” Wagner snaps, “not just parts of it you don’t mind me snooping around. Now move.”

I shut my eyes tight, inhaling deeply. This has just become an impossible mission.

I hear the dogs sniffing wildly and someone turn the doorknob, but at the same time, I see a door to my right start to open, slowly.
