Chapter 13

Carlita and Mercedes headed home with both agreeing it would make more sense to wait until the following day to visit Carriage House Inn.

“I’m hanging out with Sam tonight. He’s waiting for us to get back,” Mercedes said. “What do you have going on?”

“Nothing. I need to check in with Pete. He left a message earlier, wondering how you were doing.” After Mercedes left, Carlita phoned Pete to give him an update.

“I’m glad to hear they’re both home. With you on the case, I’m sure you’ll figure out what happened to our city’s roving reporter.”

“What are you doing tonight?”

“Hosting a private group on board The Flying Gunner.”

“That’s right. You told me about it and I completely forgot.”

“Why don’t you join us? The group is wrapping up their event at the convention center and winding down their week with a pirate cruise.”

“Is it the sci-fi enthusiasts?”

“No, but close. The forecast is for clear skies and smooth sailing. I’m serving an authentic pirate meal. We can dine on the river and snuggle up under the stars.”

“You twisted my arm. What time do you want me to be there?”

“Anytime you’re ready to head over. I’m here getting everything set up.”

Carlita promised she was on her way and then texted Mercedes to let her know she was leaving.

Thinking Tony might stop by and wonder what had happened to her, she swung by the pawn shop and found her son standing near the front, an earnest expression on his face as he talked to a customer. At least, she thought it was a customer.

“…the death of local news reporter Brock Kensington. Surely, you must have some sort of comment, considering your sister is involved in this case.”

“What’s going on?” Carlita interrupted.

“This news reporter is trying to dig up dirt, insinuating Mercedes is behind Kensington’s death.”

“I’m not insinuating. I’ve heard a rumor the police made arrests in the case and Mercedes Garlucci was one of those involved.”

Carlita could feel the tips of her ears burn. “My daughter did not kill Brock Kensington.”

“You’re trespassing. Leave now or I’m calling the cops.” Tony reached for his phone.

The reporter made a hasty retreat. On his way out, he assured them he would get his story.

Carlita locked the door behind him and turned the open sign to closed. “Great. Now the other news people are snooping around.” She told him how she and Mercedes had visited Beauregard Manor and discovered one of the other establishments Kensington had featured lodged a complaint against him.

“Accessing their computer? Are you sure he wasn’t looking for cash?” Tony shook his head. “The guy was a piece of work.”

“He was no saint, making it even harder to figure out what may have happened to him.” Carlita told him she was heading over to the pirate ship.

“I’ve been meaning to ask. Have you and Pete finally decided on a wedding date?”

“We have. With everything going on, I forgot to tell you.” Carlita gave him the date and reminded her son about Saturday afternoon’s engagement party before heading back upstairs to grab her things.
