After P.E. I passed the long, curved marble staircase to the second floor where all the artistic classes were. Had I ever been up those steps? Who cared when Lewis was in danger, from me, and I couldn’t seem to do anything about it? How could I tell him to go away when he said that it hurt him? And how could I resist him when he took my hand? I couldn’t. I physically couldn’t, which is why I needed intervention. For his safety and well-being, I had to put blockades between us, or one of these days, I would give in to my instincts, probably today with the way my luck was going.

I spent my history class taking notes, but on soul theory, not expansionism. After class, I walked slowly to the door smiling at anyone who dared catch my eye. Normal, normal, normal. No biting. Good girl. Everyone kept a respectable distance from me. Although they bumped and jostled each other, I still seemed to have a protective bubble surrounding me. I wasn’t sure if I liked that or not, but given my impulses, it was probably for the best.

When I got to the cafeteria, I hesitated at the doors. The students looked strange in their modern clothes against the gothic apse that had once held a crucifix. The bow windows still had the panes of glass with saints I didn’t know, but the one was called Saint Rose, and one was called Saint Snake because of their respective companions. Snowy sat at a table like a Madonna with her golden halo, as art-worthy as it was possible to be. I made my way to the line on the right side of the room, standing behind a nice boy who kept looking at me nervously, like I was too close to him or something. I moved forward slowly to give him more space.

Everyone’s eyes were on me as I got my lunch and then headed for Snowy’s table, balancing my tray where nothing was bloody enough to be appetizing. Ah well. Better to leave my cravings in the woods. I should go hunting tonight with Satan.

“Dari, how are you?” Snowy beamed at me like this morning’s awkwardness hadn’t happened. Could we have a conversation without insulting each other?

“Good.” I shoved something tasteless in my mouth while I pondered a subject that we wouldn’t argue about. I swallowed and cleared my throat. “I can’t get used to the architecture of this place. Even if students don’t learn anything from classes, I don’t think they can help but be inspired by the beauty. Hey, Osmond.” We still needed to talk.

He nodded, looking up at the beams even as he slid into the seat beside Snowy. “It’s my favorite thing about Sanders. Maybe you’ll feel like majoring in architecture.” He smiled slightly, showing a dimple before he bit into his sandwich.

I shrugged and finished another bite of what passed for lasagna. “Maybe. My dad’s house feels like this.”

“You mean creepy?” Snowy looked up at the ceiling, her nose wrinkled.
