CHAPTER EIGHT
Max
I drive us to Fairmont street and park in a large garage. I donât know when I stopped being nervous and started enjoying things. Seems like it happened naturally. Earlier this week at the station, bored in bed, I saw a TikTok of a happy couple picking out ugly ass clothes for each other and thought I could do one better. It was a big risk, knowing she was more tight-laced with all her lists and such, but lucky for me, my girl enjoys letting her hair down. Now, Iâm gonna make that smile last forever.
We walk, talk and laugh every time someone asks to take a picture with us. Hey, ten dollars is ten dollars. I might not actually be Dave Bautista, the actor, but they all seem to think I look like him.
âI think itâs the cheetah print. He would totally rock that,â Kerrigan says, then licks up a bite of strawberry bubble gum ice cream.
âNot better than me. Babe, I make this look good. Admit it, you tried and failed to cover up my awesome. Iâm the real winner here, but Iâll take it easy on you.â
She just shakes her head with a chuckle, a smile dancing on her face.
âI look like I jumped into a fight with Jojo Siwa and lostâ¦badly.â
All I can do is laugh at that. Her big blue eyes shine with humor and my chest pulls. She is so goddamn beautiful.
âAlright, here we are,â I say, pulling open the door for her, and the family exiting. I toss whatâs left of my vanilla milkshake and head inside, where Iâm greeted by her adorably confused expression.
âWhy have you brought me to a family photo studio?â
âIsnât it obvious?â
âUm. No?â
A deep laugh rumbles out of my mouth, but I fully intend to make her sweat.
The chiefâs daughter, Jenny, appears from the hallway.
âMax! Perfect, youâre here,â she says, motioning us to the back. I grab Kerriganâs hand, and pull her reluctant body behind me, snickering the whole way.
The room is set up for maximum cringe, and is everything I asked for.
âJenny, you outdid yourself.â
Kerrigan finally catches on and starts laughing behind her hand.
âThank you. Iâll ignore the fact you had any doubt.â Jenny laughs, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. She and I have been friends for years and itâs never been romantic, as she is the chiefâs daughter. I, yes sir man like myself, wouldnât dare try to date the bossâs daughter. Especially when the boss holds your life in his hands regularly.
âAre we taking ridiculous photos like Zach Galifianakis in that one movie?â
I burst with pride, a permanent grin on my face. She loves it. Fuck yes. I mentally high-five myself as Jenny gives us a rundown.
âAnd if all goes well, maybeâ¦just maybe, if you guys are comfortable with it, Iâll have the bedroom set up, too.â
Neither of us confirms, but Iâm a little excited that she doesnât automatically say no.
I wonder what kind of photos Jenny plans to take. My mind spins with possibilities that only make my jeans tight.
