FOURTEEN

Konrad

“TA DA!” DEAN WAVED his arm at the oven in the kitchen.

“It’s red,” I noted.

He blinked. “It’s an oven.” Then he stepped to the left. “And a sink and a refrigerator. Congratulations, Konrad, your brother just decked out your kitchen with the best kitchen appliances money can buy.”

I nodded. “Looks nice. Thank you.”

Dean appeared pained, as if I spat on the appliances instead of thanking him.

“Come on, Konrad. You could get any professional chef in here, and they’d be eager to work in this kitchen just because of these beauties.” Dean walked back to the oven and tried to give it a hug.

“Why don’t I give you two some privacy?” I chuckled.

“Ha ha. But you won’t be laughing when I cook us up an amazing lunch.”

I nodded. “Sounds good. I need to stop by the bakery anyway to deliver Chloe her clothes.”

My brother straightened, ending his molestation of the new oven. “Clothes? I see the date went well last night. No peeing on bears, I suspect.”

I groaned. He won’t ever let it go.

“No. All I’ll tell you is the date didn’t go as I had expected.”

Dean’s eyes widened, and he sat in the wooden chair by the small round table I bought a few days ago. “Why do I get the impression that your date last night makes the bear incident seem quaint in comparison?”

I pointed at him. “No. Not telling you anything. The only reason you found out about the bear incident was because of Bea’s big mouth. As long as Bea doesn’t find out what had happened, you won’t.”

His head slowly shook as he smirked at me. “Oh, Konrad, you should know better than that. I will find out, and I will taunt you with it for the rest of your life. It’s my job as your brother.”

I turned and moved toward the front door, yelling back, “Anyway, got to go. Good luck.”

I sent Chloe’s clothes out right after I tucked her into bed. It was a special overnight turnaround my cleaners have for me. Thankfully, they had a location in Bangor, so I got it back first thing this morning.

Right as I made it to the front door, my phone rang in my back pocket. I took it out but didn’t recognize the number.

I tapped to answer. “Hello?”

“Is this Konrad Love, owner of 234 and 236 Main Street in Fire Lake, Maine?”

I came to a stop as the hairs on the back of my neck rose. “Yes, I own those buildings. Is something wrong?”

“Sir, I’m with the Fire Lake Sheriff Department, and I will need you to come down to those locations. I am afraid there was a fire, and we need to ask you several questions.”

Fire?

“Was anyone hurt?”

My thoughts went straight to Chloe. Was she injured? Screw the buildings, I needed to know if she was okay.

“No. Thankfully no one was in the buildings at the time of the fire, but there is damage. If you could come down—”

“I’ll be right there.”

I threw the dry cleaning on the table in the front lobby and raced down the pathway to the street.
