Chapter Ten

Izzy

Tina called an emergency meeting at Mr. Salad’s. The off campus diner where the queer students frequented.

“I don’t know what the fuck is going on with me, Izzy. She’s like, in my head. I’m not used to this.”

It sounds like you’re falling for her.”

“No, that’s not it. I think about her all the time. When she’s not around, I need her.”

“Yeah. Exactly.” Izzy laughed. “I can’t believe you’re falling for Bethany Fox.” She bit her lip and stared at the wall above Tina’s head, pretending to scan the café menu.

“You alright, dude?” Tina asked.

“Yeah.”

“Truth. Are you okay with this? Me and Bethany.”

Izzy shrugged. “It’s okay. I’m happy for you guys. Though I am kind of freaked out by how fast Bethany has jumped headfirst into the dark side. She’s flakey.”

“You think she’ll snap out of it?”

Izzy offered a half grin. “Nah, I’m sure she’ll stick around awhile. You’ll be begging her to go home soon enough.” Izzy stood. “I need to get a sandwich.”

Izzy ordered Mr. Salad’s Crispy Muenster Sammy. A grilled cheese on Texas toast, with spicy mayo, avocado and fresh, locally grown tomatoes. She knew the cute, recently transitioned server, Jordan, would bring the food to the table but she needed some distance from Tina while she waited. Don’t be a jerk. Be happy for them. Jealousy was creeping in – hard and fast. She smiled when Jordan put her plate on the counter.

“Need anything else today?”

Your number, Izzy thought. “That’s all. Thanks, Jordan.”

Jordan smiled. Jordan smiled every time someone used his new name. Izzy had to snap back on another customer for deadnaming him, despite the fact his name tag said Jordan and Mr. Salad’s Café staff had thrown a huge party for him when he transitioned. Izzy wanted to ask Jordan out before his transition and still wanted to now. But he was posting pictures with a new girlfriend online. Izzy hadn’t got up the nerve to ask him about hanging out sometime. She wasn’t sure why. Jordan was sweet, cool and probably all around awesome. He was always wearing something with the Smurfs on it – a t-shirt, hatpin, a patch, or a single Smurf earring in his left ear. Izzy asked him once what was up and he said it was because his friends in school had nicknamed him Blue (because I was always sad, he said). Izzy noticed that he had traded Smurfs for rainbow everything as of late.

“You okay?” Jordan said, rousing Izzy from her thoughts. Izzy shook her head. “Yeah, just distracting myself. Sorry.”

“If you ever need to talk, I’m always here. Your Sammy is getting cold and your friend is clearly nervous over there waiting for you. I can’t believe Tina Simmons actually gets nervous. I’m tempted to pull out my phone and document this. I’ve never seen her fidget before.” Jordan tossed a dishtowel on over his shoulder. “Oh yeah, Mr. Salad said to tell you they are hiring if you’re interested. The app is online. Say you know me, and I’ll do my best to hook you up.
