DREW

The following night, I’m sitting in an unmarked car, hoping this time we’ve picked the next victim correctly. My phone rings. It’s Seth. “What’s up?”

“Get to Brett Carson’s house. He just got a call and headed into his back garden. You can be there faster than I can. Wolf will meet you there.”

“On my way.” Carson is a vamp gunrunner who’d as soon shoot humans as drink their blood. He recently made the news for killing a teenage girl who tried to run away after agreeing to be his blood slave.

I consider the route to his house and decide to go on foot. I run at vampire speed, houses and trees blurring beside me. I race into the yard and see Carson’s body lying on the ground, blood pooled around it. Bixby and his new partner, Watkins, have been watching the house. They crouch near him, faces pale.

“The killer was too fucking fast,” Bixby says as I walk up to them.

“Tell me what happened.”

Bixby runs his hand through his hair. Whatever happened has him rattled. “A big man with black hair and deeply tanned skin came out of the woods. Carson greeted him, and they started to talk in low voices. We stayed in position, ready to move in if necessary, but it looked like a business deal. Then Carson dropped to the ground, and the man disappeared, or seemed to, but his clothes are still here.” He gestures toward Carson’s feet. “Watkins saw it better.”

I turn toward his partner. “What did you see?”

“I was at the edge of the woods with a sniper rifle, watching through the scope. Right before Carson stiffened, something shot from the other man’s mouth, almost like a dart. After he disappeared, I zeroed in on Carson, and I saw a snake slither away from him. A few seconds later, Carson started bleeding from everywhere.”

Watkins adds, “We tried to save him, but there was nothing we could do. He was dead in less than a minute.”

I try to process all this, not wanting to believe it. “The killer is a snake shifter.”

Bixby exhales a shaky breath. “Looks like it.”

“Did anyone see where the snake went?”

Watkins points toward the woods directly behind the house. “He headed that way, but by the time we put together what had happened, we couldn’t find him.”

Bixby shakes his head. “We really fucked this one up.”

I lay a hand on his shoulder. “No, you did your best. Have you called this in?”

“Yes. A backup team and the ME are on the way.”

“Good. You wait for them. I’m going to search the woods and look for any sign of a hideout.”

“Maybe you should sit this one out,” Bixby says. “This guy fucks up vamps, remember?”

Bixby’s never shy to tell it like it is. “We don’t know what effect he has on humans. I’m as safe as any of us.”

Bixby looks like he wants to protest, but he simply says, “Yes, sir.”

I glance around the crime scene. Wolf is here now, but he’s busy talking to Carson’s neighbors.
