Chapter Five

“Okay, so now that we’ve established that I might be, in fact, be a Bayou Witch, is there some way you can help me? Teach me or something? My magic still only partially works," I admitted.

She nodded. “Yep, I can help you. I can even give you your very first lesson right now. You gotta learn to use the energy, both light and dark, of the bayou. Draw from it. That will make your powers strong right fast."

“And how do I do that?"

“Especially without zapping everyone around her. She’s a loose cannon, this one,” Jocko said with a snort.

Babette chose that moment to slither toward his ball. Jocko’s snarky amusement disappeared as he eyed her, and I wasn't about to rescue him.

“I’ve never actually injured anybody,” I told Sue, feeling the need to defend myself. “Truthfully, thus far, I haven’t been able to do much of anything with my magic. I mean, I did heal my husband. Which is pretty much why he became my husband. But that’s a whole other story.”

Sue gaped at me. “Coo-wee. You healed a rougarou?” She looked thoroughly impressed. “Then you must be a right powerful Bayou Witch.”

“Really?”

She nodded. “And with my help, you’ll be formidable.” She said the last word with a heavy Cajun accent.

So, Sue was essentially my Yoda living out in the swamp and being all weirdly wise. I had to admit that was kind of cool. Although, we would have to put the kibosh on any further licking.

“Okay, this is all very exciting, but there is another reason I’m here.”

“Yes, let’s get to that part. Quickly,” Jocko said, his voice panicked. I saw that Babette had coiled around his ball and peered at him through the glass.

Sue laughed and pulled her snake away. “That’s Babette, for ya. She’s a friendly one.”

I nodded, not sure from the gleam in the snake’s black eyes that it was friendship with my crawfish that she had in mind.

Sue’s next words drew my attention away from the snake. "You are here about the prince’s missing kin."

“Whoa, she is good," Jocko said, then raised his thimble to indicate that he could use a refill. I ignored him.

“Do you have any idea where they are?” I asked.

“I know where one of them is.”

I straightened in my seat, excited. “You do? Where?”

“The Grunch have him.”

“The Grunch?” I had no idea what that was, but it didn’t sound good.

“Oh, putain,” Jocko said, his voice low with dread.

“What?” I gaped between the two of them. "What is the Grunch?”

“What are the Grunch," Sue clarified. “Nasty, wicked creatures that live along the banks of the bayou, hiding in the tall grass and bushes. No one really knows how they came into existence. Some people believe that they were some kind of trolls or dwarves and somehow turned into these creatures that are more monster than anything else. But there are others who think that they were cursed by a witch."

“What kind of witch?"

She shrugged, then met my gaze. “Not a good witch, that's for sure.
