CHAPTER TWELVE

Dune

I hate that human, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect him. He’s a quick thinker in the clutch and brave considering he has no physical assets like heightened senses or flight. He’s somewhat competent as a soldier and a strategist. And damn it, by what I heard this morning, he’s a decent lover too.

I still hate him.

It strikes me as the shooting starts that my duty as a General of the Crown is to protect King Creed and his wife and I don’t know where they are. As I scan the wreckage of their truck, it’s obvious they are long gone.

How am I supposed to earn respect as one of Princess Honor’s warriors if I don’t have a member of the crown to guard?

Another round of weapon’s fire riddles the air and I dive and swoop out of the way. All right. If I can’t protect the royal couple, I can at least stop the men who are actively trying to kill them.

I track where the shots are coming from.

Below me—that’s obvious.

I climb a few dozen feet, leveling out at an altitude that keeps me beyond the range of blaster bolts.

“Where are they?” the massive dragon says, pulling up beside me.

“Down there somewhere.”

“Not good enough, falcon,” he snaps. “If someone has the balls to bomb my truck with me and my mates inside it, you’ve got to know what’s going on. If that means you put yourself in the line of fire, you slecking well do it.”

“Where are the king and queen?”

“Tundra took Creed to the City Center. Doc, Kotah, and Brant took Keyla into one of the buildings to start triaging the citizens.”

“And Honor?”

“No idea. Focus on what’s in front of us and we can have a reunion later.” He drops in a whoosh of his mighty wings and starts searching the urban setting.

The shooting restarts almost immediately.

“Got them… behind those bronze sculptures. Two men in street bandit rags… and four more on the opposite side of the road trying to circle them.”

The scorching heat of the phoenix announces the arrival of Calli before we see or hear her. “I’ll get those six. You boys find me some more to fry.”

Tundra flies overhead. “Where is the queen?”

“I don’t know. The king’s truck is overturned and empty.” I go back to scanning the war-torn street below.

“Find Queen Keyla and secure her,” Tundra says. “I’ll help Calli and Rhylan secure the street.”

“One problem with that plan,” I say. “I don’t know where they are. How about you secure the queen and I help with the fight?”

He looks at me and frowns. “You need to take this seriously, Dune. Lives are at stake.”

I roll my eyes. “Just go. You can belittle me later.”

For once, Tundra lets me win an argument. Will wonders never cease. I watch his white feathers cut through the morning sky and shake myself.

He’s trusting me to do my job?

Then I guess I better do my job.

Getting my head back into the fight, I laugh at the battle in progress.
