This week has been the most trying for me. Honeydew is busier than ever and I don’t see business slowing down any time soon. I have all six of my catering jobs on the calendar, along with consult meetings. I decided to keep the following week—the wedding week—as free as I could. The twins’ schedules remain unchanged, along with my regular duties at Honeydew.

“Connor, thank you again for pulling babysitting duty tonight. I know a playa of your caliber had to do some major fast talking to reschedule those dates.”

“You can stop with the sarcasm. I’ll gladly bring the kids with me because once you tell Peggy about this shotgun wedding, she’ll blow through the roof.”

“Kiss my ass. It’s not a shotgun wedding. I’m not pregnant.”

He laughs at my rebuttal. “Just kidding, Clari. It’s my pleasure to help a friend. You know I love the little boogers.” He hands me the last pillow he cased with fresh linens. He’s helping me prepare one of the guest rooms for Peggy. She is due to arrive later tonight. We were supposed to have dinner—she, Dylan and I—but her job ran late. She’s a social worker and her cases don’t always stick to a regular nine to five work day schedule.

“So, what’s up with you and Rhonda?” I ask Connor.

He tosses me a few more decorative pillows. I watch his mouth twitch a few times before he rubs the back of his neck, a sure sign of his discomfort. I have noticed the past few weeks that he and Rhonda have been avoiding each other. My plan was to tell them about my engagement together, but Connor, who works out of his home as a video game designer, claimed he was unavailable.

After I told him, he laughed and with his usual Connor smile—white teeth, full lips framed in a neatly trimmed goatee—he offered his congratulations. He asked me no extensive questions, only whether Dylan was worthy of the honor.

That’s one thing I love about Connor. He trusts me. Even though I know he has his reservations about the situation, he trusts me to know what makes me happy. However, let the situation get out of hand, and he steps in with the force of a determined big brother. If he were there when I told Rhonda, he might have helped to keep things calmer between us. Who in the hell am I kidding? He would have pissed Rhonda off because he wasn’t upset enough for her liking, which would have made matters worse between them.

“I’m not crazy, Connor,” I say when I realize he may not give me an answer. “What’s going on? The last time y’all avoided each other like this was after senior prom in high school.”

“Come on, you’re imagining things. Rhonda and I are good.”

“Lie.”

“No, seriously, we’re good.”

“Lie. Lie. Lie. Spill. I don’t think it’s fair to me or the kids if you and Rhonda are beefing with each other when we need you two for support through the next week.
