Since I sing the merits of reading the writings of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, I have devoured Humphrey Carpenter’s The Inklings: C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and Their Friends. Carpenter has also written an excellent book on the life of Tolkien. How I would have enjoyed eavesdropping in The Eagle and Child Pub to listen to the discussions of the Inklings! It’s amazing how reading biographies gives you the illusion of knowing the people involved.

Dorothy Clark Wilson wrote an enlightening biography of missionary doctor Paul Brand and his work with lepers in India, called Ten Fingers for God. It’s a fascinating account of a man of God whose attention to detail changed the world for lepers. A new edition is in
