Step 3: Alternately layer compost materials and soil.

Put equal amounts of compost material and soil into the compost pit, and divide them into layers. You can start with 4 to 5 inches of compost, top it off with soil, add another layer of compost materials, and so on. Your topmost layer should be garden soil. Some gardeners like to stir the entire mix of compost and soil in order to facilitate decomposition. Others prefer to leave the soil and materials to decompose at their own rate.

Step 4: Cover the compost pit, and leave it alone for 3 to 4 weeks.
