To Nick’s surprise, Jake was available that afternoon to get coffee in Santa Monica. He sent a text that read: Meet me at Bunny Café at 2pm. A few minutes later, he followed it up with: It’s been a long time since we’ve talked.

That was an understatement. He and Jake had never really been close friends, but they’d always have a unique, if dramatic, connection. Jake was the one who’d reached out to tell him that his ex-wife was cheating on him with her boss.

The most surprising thing about Jake’s admission was that at the time he’d been Amelia’s best friend.

Traffic in LA was a disaster, so Nick padded his drive with plenty of extra time to get out there. Still, he wound up a few minutes late because parking was so terrible. When he arrived at the café, Jake was sitting just outside, a latte and a scone in front of him, his sunglasses hiding his expression.

“Sorry I’m late,” Nick said, taking the chair opposite him. “I don’t drive out this way very often.”

“I know it’s far from where you live, but I’m partial to this place. They have the best lattes, and an amazing chocolate chip scone. I tell myself it’s not a dessert, but it is.” Jake took a sip of his drink, then removed his sunglasses and looked at Nick, his expression inscrutable. “Why did you want to get together? I’ll admit, I’m curious.”

Nick fiddled with his napkin, trying to figure out how to broach the subject. “Well, to be honest, you were the only person I could think of who really might be able to help me figure something out. None of my friends really know everything about Amelia… she got most of our social group in the divorce.”

“She manipulated the hell out of them,” Jake said, his voice bitter. “I lost a lot of friends because of her.”

“Do you regret it?” Nick asked, because he’d always wondered. “Telling me about the affair?”

“Not for a second.” Jake’s voice was fierce and certain. “If anything, I regret not telling on her sooner. She knew what she was doing was wrong, and she put me in the position to lie for her. I never should’ve fallen for it, but I believed her when she said her marriage was bad… until I met you, of course. It was pretty obvious she’d been lying the whole time.”

“She was the greatest liar,” Nick said, remembering all the times she’d pulled the wool over his eyes. “Sometimes I think she lied to herself the most.”

“Yeah, well, our lives are better off without her in it.” Spotting the waitress, Jake motioned her over and ordered a latte and chocolate chip scone for Nick—neither of which he’d said he wanted, but there was no use protesting. Once she was gone, Jake asked, “So what are you here for? Surely you don’t just want to talk about your ex-wife.”

“No, there’s something else.” Frowning, Nick chewed on his lower lip for a while, then blurted out, “I’m starting to think I might be gay.
