CHAPTER 10

As Holly pulled up to the bookstore to start her shift, she felt horrible. She wasn’t physically sick, she was heartsick. The fight with Wade was their first big fight and neither one of them had spoken to the other since lunch. She found herself reaching for her phone to message him every so often, only to catch herself and put it back down. She refused to be the one to break the silence.

After all, since he was the one who was being ridiculous, he should be the first to apologize, not her. How could he possibly think it was okay to steal a test and sell the answers? And why did he have to paint her as the bad guy? It was like he thought she couldn’t possibly understand his reasoning because she was different. It was just wrong on so many levels, and it made her stomach feel like it was twisted in knots.

Climbing out of her car, she shut the door a little harder than she’d intended to. Ever since lunch she’d been distracted and irritable with everyone. Her temper was short, and her patience was thin. She did her best to hide it, but she could tell that people were giving her some distance.

One teacher had even asked her if she was okay, and she’d been forced to simply nod for fear that if she said anything, she’d break down in tears. For the most part, everyone seemed to just think she was having a moody day, and they allowed that, for which she was grateful.

When she opened the door to the bookstore, she was surprised to see Fiona sitting in one of the armchairs browsing through a book and sipping a mug of coffee. She looked completely relaxed and at peace with the world, and Holly was envious of her.

“Hey, Holly,” Fiona said brightly when she looked up and saw her niece. “How was school today? I took over for Abra this afternoon. She had an appointment and needed to leave early.”

“It was fine,” Holly grumbled but her voice indicated that it most certainly was not. Fiona was surprised by her somber tone. It wasn’t like Holly to be so obviously grumpy.

“You don’t sound fine,” she said as she slipped a bookmark in to mark her page and closed the book. “Want to talk about it?” She slid the book down next to her in the chair and gave Holly her full attention.

“I’m fine,” Holly sighed as she put away her backpack. She’d decided to bring it in with her just in case it was a slow evening, so she could look over her notes and do the rest of her homework. Everyone else might be cheating, but she was determined to earn her grade.

The thought of it made her feel bitter all over again, which made her rethink keeping it to herself. The last thing she wanted to do was snap at Fiona. “Actually, maybe I should talk about it.”

She was starting to think that the longer she held it in, the more people she was going to upset in the process.
