Chapter Nine: Jessie

I should have known better.

I’ve thought of myself as being smart with Daryll. He’d done so much for me but had he really? He took me off the streets and gave me a shot which was a perfect way for me to feel forever beholden to him. As much as I’d resisted that feeling, it had worked. It probably wasn’t so much different than how he’d treated Laura.

Everything has fallen into place in my head. Daryll was Laura’s abusive ex-boyfriend and Beth was his daughter. Somehow that last part freaked me out the most. Beth was Daryll’s daughter. He obviously had no idea he had a kid out there. It wasn’t mentioned at all in the dossier. Daryll had narrowed down where Laura was living but never found out about the baby girl. If he had, he would have demanded I bring her to him. The thought made my blood run cold.

I hadn’t been able to think of anything else but the contents of that dossier since I’d read it. It was horrifying and yet it all made perfect sense. I felt stupid now for not having put it together before.

I paced around the cottage, by turns angry, frustrated, and vibrating with anxiety. I mainly just wanted to kill Daryll. Now that I knew that he was the one who had hurt Laura, nevermind wanting to kill her now, I was enraged. She hadn’t gone into much detail but I knew what kind of man Daryll was and I could tell that Laura was pretty traumatized. I hated to think about it. It made me sick. Now he wanted her dead just because she had the gall to leave him.

What the hell was I going to do?

There was no question in my mind as to whether or not I was going to kill Laura. That simply wasn’t happening. He’d put out hits before but nobody this innocent, that was just for starters. Nevermind that I was falling for Laura. There was no way I would ever hurt her.

I was so riled up by the whole thing, I shifted and went on a flight and then walked to town just to get some energy out. I found myself buying a bottle of bourbon and drank just a couple fingers as I sat out on my porch, staring out at the woods and trying to figure out what the hell I was going to do.

If I didn’t kill Laura, Daryll would hunt me down and kill me. I wouldn't just lie about it either. Daryll was thorough.

All of this was beside the point that Daryll had known very well that I didn’t like hits even if they were kinda deserved. I’d never considered myself a killer. I’d just told him I was considering leaving the life and he had to have known it was partly because of shit like this. Then he’d gone and given me the worst possible kind of hit; an innocent woman who had just tried to get away from her abusive boyfriend.
