Chapter Twelve

The first thing Anna smelled on Sunday morning was coffee. She walked downstairs, almost on autopilot, driven by her nose.

“How did you sleep? Are you hungry?” her grandmother asked from the foot of the stairs.

“I slept well, for sure, but not enough. I might take it easy today, although I have to pick up a few things.”

Her grandmother nodded. “You didn’t answer the hungry part.”

“I didn’t, but I think I am.”

Oma smiled back at her and led her into the kitchen. “I feel like some eggs and toast. You pour the coffee, and I’ll make some breakfast. Maybe hash browns?”

She felt the rumbling in her stomach before she was able to answer. “I guess my stomach is answering for me.”

Not long after, she and her grandmother were sitting at the wooden table in the dining room. She took a long sip of the coffee as her grandmother dished potatoes. “Oh, that is good,” Anna said.

“I like cooking like this,” Oma replied. “So how was the party last night?”

“You don’t mince words, do you?”

Oma smiled. “Nope. Not at all. I want to know what’s going on.”

Did she know what was going on? Did she know what to say?

She didn’t. “I don’t think there are easy answers,” she finally said, starting with the truth. “The party was fun, and Jacob and I finally had a really good conversation. And even though it feels right again, we also have so much to deal with and I’m not sure if we’ll be able to. Which makes me sad because it’s so hard.”

“It’s hard when it’s good, when it’s important.”

Anna took a piece of challah toast. “I think what’s hard about it is, how intertwined we are and yet we’re not…synched right now.”

“Not synched?”

She nodded. “We had an incident a few months ago, and we finally talked about it, but now that we’ve dealt with this problem, how do we tackle what else is going on? How did we get to the point where this rule became easy to break, and a deal breaker? One that feels…insurmountable.”

“Okay. So what else is happening? What’s the problem?”

“Well.” Anna sighed and took a bite of her eggs. “Aside from the mess with Jacob that colors the way I see Rockliffe Manor, my new friends expect me to be making life-changing decisions because my career happened to bring me here for a summer. They act like I’ve moved here.”

“Well,” her grandmother asked, “have you?”

“I haven’t,” Anna replied. “I’m still the same person, my apartment and job are both in the city, and my parents still live in Hollowville. I’m just on a special assignment. People do that and come back. How do I get them, all of them, to understand that?”

“Friendships are complex things,” her grandmother said.

“Tell me about it.” It occurred to Anna that of all the people in her life, her grandmother was best equipped to talk to her about the nature of friendships. “Speaking of friendships, what’s the story with you and Rose? How did
