Sylvia and other trans people marched together as a group alongside Gay Youth toward the front of the fifteen-block procession.

Organizers had not expected such a turnout, but their goal was accomplished; their work had guaranteed that the uprisings in June 1969 would not be lost to history.

By September 1970, at nineteen years old, Sylvia was homeless again. The dedication and effort she put into the movement had not helped her escape poverty.

While sleeping in Sheridan Square park, Sylvia was spotted by Bob Kohler, a supportive older gay activist who had helped launch GLF. He was on his way to New York University (NYU) to support a group of students who were in the middle of a sit-in protest. Student-led protests had become common in the 1960s and continued into the 1970s.

Bob shared what he knew about what was happening at NYU and why. He told Sylvia how the queer students were demanding support from their campus administration by taking over the basement of a campus building. Columbia University students, across the city, had also organized an action in support of gay rights the year prior. Bob warned that the action may get intense, but Sylvia, who was the average age of most university students, followed him anyway.

The student sit-in took place in the basement of NYU’s Weinstein Hall to protest a denied event permit and the campus’s lack of support for trans and queer students. Multiple community-based groups gathered in solidarity with NYU’s Gay Student Liberation. Those present included members of Gay Liberation Front, Christopher Street Liberation Day committee, Radicalesbians, Gay Activist Alliance, and Gay Youth.
