Melody

When I finally make it home after a long flight that just about drained my bank account dry, I fall into bed, asleep the second my head hits my familiar pillow. When I wake up hours later, I have no idea what day or time it is and start to feel foolish all over again. But this time, my embarrassment is tinged with anger. Daniel lied to me. He’d pretended to be my date and whisked me away with promises to make it up to me for being late. What had really been doing at the restaurant?

Despite my anger, I already miss Daniel. The more I think about, there’s absolutely no way he was kidnapping me. I must have misunderstood his phone call. And truth be told, I’m equally pissed at myself for getting caught up in Annie’s hysteria. Sure, it was crazy, flying across the world with a man I just met, but it was romantic and passionate, too. No one with devious intentions could have looked at me, touched me, the way Daniel did.

I can’t even let him know what happened. My face burns at the thought of having to admit to him what I thought he was capable of. But I don’t even know his last name or a number to call him. And maybe I really did save my own life. I’ll never know what might have been and have to accept those few perfect hours are all I’ll get with the man I gave everything to. The man who certainly gave me plenty of good memories to mull over wistfully.

And now, I’m not just lonely, I’m broke. It’s going to take me a while to bounce back from this. I message Annie, telling her I’m safe at home, but that I don’t want to talk about it. Maybe I’ll never want to talk about it.

I’m really sorry, she texts back.

I’m not sure what for. She was only looking out for me, and what I did was definitely out of character. No one else but Daniel could ever have enticed me to get on a plane like that.
