Chapter 10
Phoenix
I already knew what the council intended, but I just couldnât bring myself to tell Willow. She was already afraid, and I didnât want to scare her any more. But that was nothing compared to what I was feeling when I walked into the council room and saw her in that cage like a trapped animal.
Hurrying to the front of the room, I tried the door, but it was locked. Anger coursed through me, and I slammed my palm against the bars. How could they cage her like an animal? She didnât deserve this kind of treatment. She didnât deserve to be a prisoner at all. She hadnât done anything.
As soon as I hit the bars, I saw Willowâs face fill with terror. She hurried to the back of the cage and there was pure panic on her face. She glanced at me then looked out over the shifters who were slowly filling the room.
When she sank to the floor and buried her face in her arms, my wolf let out a growl. Willow was afraid, and she was trying to hide from me. I had frightened her, but I needed to get through to her. Now was not the time for cowering. She needed to be strong.
âWillow,â I said softly but loudly enough that I knew she could hear me. âDonât be afraid of me. I hate thisâ¦what theyâve done to you. It hurts me to see you like this,â I told her.
She slowly raised her head until our eyes met. There was so much sorrow in her gaze, and I longed to pull her against me and hold her. But I couldnât.
âWillow, you have to be strong now. You have to show them they are wrong about you. Donât let them win. You told them you would fight them to your dying breath. Show them thatâs who you are. Youâre a fighter, and Iâm with you, Willow. Please, donât give up,â I begged her.
She cocked her head to the side as she studied me. It was adorable, and I couldnât help the hint of a smile that came to my lips.
Something seemed to click inside of her at that moment, and she stood to her feet. Then she stepped towards me and reached through the bars. I grabbed her hand and lifted it to my lips, kissing her knuckles.
âIâm ready to fight,â she whispered. I nodded once then turned as the council chambers door opened.
The eight council members entered the room, dressed in their long, flowing robes. They all took a seat on their exalted chairs at the front of the room. They loved to pretend they were some kind of royalty and lord over the rest of us, but I felt nothing but contempt towards them all.
I looked back at Willow and rolled my eyes. She covered her mouth with her hand to hide her grin, but I could see the amusement in her eyes. I winked then turned back to look at the council. Willowâs hand was still in mine.
