Chapter 15

Lex

I loathed having to walk away from Aria. I shouldn’t have gone with her to the table, but I’d forgotten Polonius had rules regarding the women interacting with anyone outside of himself and his guards. Still, Polonius had granted me permission to be with Aria, as he was more interested in what she could learn with my help than he was in her fidelity and virtue.

Despite the tiny misstep, I was finding it difficult to keep Aria safe. Lucien had no privileges in Polonius’s castle, and he wasn’t a man of size or strength. All I could do was be a silent observer, but it was hard to even do that if I wasn’t allowed to be near her.

Since there wasn’t anything I could do to change the current circumstances, I grabbed an apple off one of the buffet tables. Instead of finding a place to sit down and eat it, I used the time to search the castle and see what information I could gather for Navarrah’s troops. I also wanted to find an exit strategy to get Aria and me out of there.

I ambled through the castle as if I belonged there and knew where I was going. I followed hallways I thought led to an exit, trying to understand the layout and find unguarded entry and exit points. Aria may have wanted to stay so that she could find her identity and prove her worth, but I suspected that Polonius would force her to do things for his personal gain. Likely, he didn’t intend to keep her alive after he got what he needed from her. While I wouldn’t say anything to her about it, I kept my eyes open, ready to find a way to defeat Polonius.

As I walked down the corridors, I reminded myself that I was here as a mage scholar. Mage scholars were respected and—more importantly—non-threatening entities. While I knew nothing of being a mage, my look and dress were enough to make me seem like one. Since no one other than Amadeus and Sire Vanoire knew what a mage scholar might know, my ignorance didn’t bother me.

I nodded to the guards and said a humble hello whenever we made eye contact. As I neared a fork in the hallway, I heard voices I recognized.

“Yes, I do find it very interesting,” Sire Vanoire said.

He and Polonius were in the dining room, but in the part farthest from Aria and the other wives. I managed to get a fairly good view of them from a crack in the lavatory door in the hallway just off the northernmost entrance to the dining room.

I had exited on the southern end, and after taking hallways that twisted and turned, I found myself back at the dining room at the northern end. If I closed the lavatory door and locked it, I could still see both men through a crack between the jamb and the door. Everything in Polonius’s castle was crudely made, so it didn’t surprise me that the door didn’t fit the jamb.
