IDRA

I sat up in my bed, trying to keep the agony and effort it cost me off of my face. I’m pleased to see the scarred visage of Chief Harok enter my bedchamber. Something I never thought would be a relief, to be honest.

“My Chief.”

My voice sounds so pathetic, so weak. It’s as if I am a bag-throated frog croaking to attract a mate to my scratchy lily pad.

“Idra, you’re looking stronger every day.”

“Indeed.” I try to grin, but I’m sure it looks strained. “In fact, I believe that I no longer need a caregiver in my home.”

The chief’s gaze holds something I cannot identify. Is he … is he amused by me for some reason?

“I’m pleased to hear you say that, Idra.” He gestures toward the clay pitcher of water on a table not far from my bed. “But you understand I need to make sure you aren’t a danger to yourself. All you have to do is walk over to that pitcher and get yourself a drink.”

“Of course, I can do that.” I swing my legs over the bed. Or try to. One leg makes its way out over the edge, but the other gets mired in blankets. After a few moments of embarrassing floundering, I give up the effort and sit back in bed. “I’m not thirsty at the moment.”

Chief Harok shakes his head.

“You are too wise to be so stubborn, Idra. Surely you know that you are not yet ready to care for your own needs.”

I want to argue, but I can’t.

“Fine, then,” I say stiffly. “Then you must get me a different caregiver. Jenna is unacceptable.”

“Unacceptable? Has she been derelict in her duties?” His eyebrows climb high on his face. “Shall I have her beaten, or perhaps have her spend a night in the holding cells?”

“No!” My voice rises to its original power, and my heart thuds in my chest. “No, she has done an outstanding job. Exemplary in every respect.”

He spreads his hands out and frowns.

“Then, what is the problem? Why must I find you someone else?”

“I … I ….” I cannot think of anything. As usual, when the subject is Jenna, my thoughts pile upon each other like stones tumbling down a hill. “She is too pretty.”

“Too pretty?” Chief Harok indulges in a smile twisted by his scar. “I think that you are grasping at tubes, my old friend.”

“The human phrase you attempted is known as grasping at straws, my Chief, and I have good reasons to want someone else.”

“Then please, tell me.”

I open my mouth, close it, and then turn away from him.

“It is a matter I would prefer not to discuss.”

“I see.” Chief Harok’s tone seems to indicate he knows the reason and does not care. “It’s a pity, then, that there simply is no one else available to take care of you.”

“My Chief, you cannot be serious. There are hundreds of humans here. Why must it be this one?”

“It’s a busy time here at the keep. We must prepare for the inevitable clash with the Dark Elves.
