Chapter Twelve|| Gianni

“Look Mommy! I do it by myself!” Milani squealed with excitement.

The doctors had advised us that kids were always more resilient than adults gave them credit for, and that they healed up faster too; thankfully, they were right on the money about Milani, because she was surprising us all with her progress. After what seemed like an endless round of physical therapy sessions, my baby girl was now up and moving around, able to walk with the assistance of a walker.

“I see you, angel face! Such a big girl! You rock!”

“I sooper-ro!” she beamed, referring to herself as a superhero as she’d heard the rest of the family and her medical team do so many times.

In spite of all the confusion going on around us, I was so thankful that Milani was surrounded by so much love and support.

“She certainly is a superhero,” her physical therapy assistant agreed. “Well, I think she’s made enough progress for the day to take the rest of the week off, Mrs. Carson.”

“No! I walk!” Milani asserted herself, causing myself, the therapist, and the PT assistant to slip into an easy laugh. “Not funny!” Milani frowned and tooted her little lips up; she was truly my child and had my quick temper to prove it.

“Aww, Mommy’s sorry, baby. You’re right, it’s not funny, and we will do this again tomorrow, and every day as long as you want, okay?”

“Mrs. Carson, a word?”

“Sure, I’ll be right back, okay doll face?” Milani was back to her jovial self just that quick, and blowing me kisses as I left the room.

I stepped out into the hall with the therapist so we could talk.

“I’m pleased, and quite frankly amazed with Milani’s progress. She’s progressing much better than we could have possibly imagined.”

“I told you, Doc, prayer changes things. That baby in there is special.”

Truth was, Milani had a fierce circle of prayer warriors that had been at it the minute news of our accident broke.

“I do have to share, though, I’m concerned about pushing her too hard too soon.”

“I understand, but I personally don’t have a problem with the longer sessions as long as she’s got the energy for it. We’re making sure she gets plenty of rest per your direction, so I’d really prefer to let her keep pressing forward, and we’ll pull back if you feel that it’s having an adverse effect on her recovery.”

“I understand, ma’am,” the therapist smiled.

I understood her concerns, but Milani’s therapy sessions had really been the key to keeping her spirits up, and I wasn’t about to take that away from her. Milani was having such a rough day when the therapist came out three days ago that the therapist opted to just go ahead and cancel her sessions until she was in better spirits. Thankfully, she ran her own practice and was agreeable to come out on today, Sunday, for a make-up session.

“Okay, so I think we’re all set for today, and we’ll see you on Tuesday, little Ms. Super Hero,” the PT assistant was saying to Milani when we stepped back inside the room.
