Tokoriki island was the most beautiful place Tina had ever seen.

The air was a comfortable temperature and felt clean and filtered when she breathed it in. The waters were crystal-clear; the sand was a warm tan shade, soft and grainy. The natives were primarily Black and brown people, always smiling, with flowers in their hair or around their necks.

After their stand-up paddleboarding, Tina wondered aloud why the hotel had less traffic than she would typically see at a beach resort.

“This isn’t just any beach resort, beau,” Malik told her. “Tokoriki island only hosts seventy-two guests at a time. It’s an exclusive resort in every way.”

“Wow. That’s it?” Her brows furrowed. “How do they make money like that?”

Malik’s smile brightened his face. “Trust me, they make enough.”

Tina gasped. “Oh, no. You spent an arm, and a leg on this trip, didn’t you?”

“I’ll never tell.”

She laughed. “You’ll never give me the option to tell you what I want again. I know it.”

They held hands as they strolled down the beach when Malik paused and drew her closer. With a hand slipping to caress her neck, he squeezed her other hand. “Money is no object. Say it with me.”

“I’d be lying.”

He suppressed a laugh, but his lips spread into a smile. “When Tina is with Malik, money is no object. Now you can say it.”

Her smile pulled, revealing her teeth. “When Tina is with Malik, money is no object.”

“Good girl.”

“That actually felt good.”

“Words can make you feel great. They carry life and death when spoken. I use them to uplift, love, and….” Thoughts of the fight he’d had with his father barraged him.

“And what?”

Malik shook off the thoughts. “I take that back. I’m not a saint. I often try to use words to uplift, love, and express my heart’s intentions with others.”

Tina nodded. “You didn’t have to clarify. I knew what you meant.”

Wind shuffled around them, and they ended their quiet walk by climbing aboard a motorboat and heading to the nearby Monu Island.

Their arrival was similar to arriving at Tokoriki Island, except the transport was by boat instead of air. Mature, leafy coconut trees were plentiful, but her attention was immediately drawn to the beautiful picnic set out for them.

“Oooh…how nice,” Tina murmured, taking her eyes over the coconut drinks stationed next to their lunch.

“If you would like alcohol in your drink, it can be added to your coconut.”

Tina’s eyes twinkled. “I would like that very much.”

Malik laughed and nodded at their server, who produced a bottle of tequila.

“For you, sir?” the server asked.

“Yes, thank you.”

“These coconuts are so pretty and bright white inside.”

“Oh yeah, the locals have a story about the coconuts here.”

“What’s the story?”

Malik glanced at the server, and the server asked, “Do you mind if I tell her?"

“Not at all.”

“The coconut tree is considered the tree of life. Because coconuts can be used for clothes, shelter, food, fruits, seeds, and oil. For that reason, we ensure that the coconut trees are well taken care of, and use them in our daily lives.
