Liam

I didn’t get to be a successful cardiac surgeon by falling apart in tense situations. Trust me on that. If some dude on a crowded flight turns up with shooting pains in his left arm and across his chest and his companion shouts out a frantic We need a doctor over here!, I’m the guy you hope answers the call. Same thing with gruesome car accidents, where someone threatens to bleed out by the side of the road before the EMTs arrive. I’d probably also be great at a hostage negotiation or talking a would-be jumper down from a ledge. I’m fine with snakes, spiders, heights and public speaking.

In short, I’m generally a cool cucumber. Shit doesn’t get to me.

Normally.

So you and Martha Stewart will probably both laugh your asses off to discover that weddings are my own personal kryptonite.

I’m dead serious.

Every time one of my buddies gets married (and most of them are married by now, the fuckers), I take another journey through the seven rings of hell. Starting with signing the stupid guestbook at the ceremony and ending with the spectacle of watching grown adults tackle each other for the pleasure of capturing a used bouquet of flowers while their partner, more often than not, tries to hide in the shadowy perimeters of the ballroom and/or freezes with a wooden smile of horror affixed to their face.

Weddings make me tense into a tuxedo-wearing block of cement. No lie.

I do not want to see ribbons, flowers or candles. I do not want to eat cake. I do not want to raise a glass of champagne in a toast.

And the biggies?

I do not want to sit quietly by and watch another couple stare lovingly into each other’s eyes and promise forever while also remembering the silent hostility between my father and my mother. Who, surprisingly, did not approve of his mistress and love child.

I do not want to remember the way Mia—

“Liam. You ready? It’s showtime.”

Startled out of my morose thoughts, I do my best to block them out and glance around to discover the happy groom watching me. Everyone else has gone downstairs already, evidently. Matter of fact, I now hear the strains of a string quartet playing Pachelbel’s Canon in the huge foyer, where the ceremony will take place momentarily beneath a monster arch of flowers that they set up earlier. Ryker’s standing at the bedroom door and looking back at me as though I’m crazy. Which I probably am.

“Right behind you,” I say, blinking myself out of my shitty mood and trying to manage a smile as we walk down the long hallway toward the stairs. Actually, he floats and I trudge, which isn’t the look I’m going for on the happiest day of my sister’s life. I decide I need to make a bigger effort, so I put more perk in my voice. “Got the rings?”

“Right here,” he says, patting his pocket.

“Good man,” I say, clapping him on the back.

“Listen.” He stops and turns to face me, catching me by surprise with his sudden fervor.
