THE HIKE

From the trailhead sign drop down from the Glacier Point Road on a much-trampled soft dirt path into soggy Mono Meadow at 0.6 mile. The numerous creeklets through the meadow support a dense growth of tall wildflowers of all kinds and colors, sometimes thick enough to obscure the trail. Back in dense lodgepole pine forest, the trail crosses a tributary of Illilouette Creek. A log, slightly hidden in willows to the left, is the easiest way to the other side. A little later, after negotiating some fairly steep downhill switch-backs, arrive at a junction at 2.9 miles. The placement of the signs is confusing because there are two sets of them. Go straight past the first sign (toward Nevada Fall), and in just a few yards you’ll see the second, where you turn right (east) toward Ottoway Lakes and Merced Pass.

Plod through heavy sand over open ground beneath a series of bare, rounded domes, the largest of which is Mount Starr King. Reenter what used to be Jeffrey pine forest, bleak and fire-blackened now. The trail draws nearer and nearer to the south bank of Illilouette Creek. When you are near enough to the stream to spot the trampled barren dirt below the trail where people have camped too near the water, stay alert for a line of small boulders/big rocks across the trail that indicate the ford. Pause to pick out the place where the trail resumes on the other side, between cut logs, before you start across. It’s hard to find if you cross at a different place. The creek is wide and deep enough to go over your boot tops for most of the year, though sometimes you can find a log or
