A MISLEADING MONUMENT

The phrase “golden spike” comes from railroad history, where it was common to celebrate a finished rail route by driving a spike into the ground; the original “golden spike” refers specifically to the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. While the PCT’s Golden Spike Monument is located adjacent to a railroad, the name is merely symbolic—a way to signify the trail’s “completion” in 1993 after a land easement was granted for one last bit of trail construction in the nearby Sierra Pelona.
